Lighthouse Beach

The first image in the series, Lighthouse Beach, was captured in Chatham, Massachusetts.

What makes this image compelling isn't what has been added—it's what has been left out. There is nothing to distract the eye. Nothing to anchor it to a specific time or season. At first glance, it could be a winter scene with its light, muted sky and snow-covered sand, or a summer day, or, as it was on this day, an overcast day in spring. The beach stretches into the distance with very little to interrupt the scene. The dunes form a single dark line against the pale shoreline, while gentle streaks in the sky echo the direction of the beach below.

Film was the natural choice for creating this image. It renders subtle tonal transitions with a softness that complements the calm atmosphere of the scene. The film grain and organic texture become part of the photograph rather than distractions, giving the print a timeless quality that feels equally at home in a modern or traditional space.
